Founders Day Nominees PAST DUE! Is Your Unit in Good Standing?

Each unit was asked to submit its honoree for a Founders Day Award by the end of February. To date, we’ve heard from 18 units, and we can’t imagine the rest of you want to let this opportunity pass! DON’T LET YOUR UNIT BE LEFT OUT during the March 22 TVC PTA Founders Day Recognition!

Why do we celebrate Founders Day? Founders Day is an annual reminder that each of us is part of something MUCH BIGGER. The actions we take in our individual schools, when magnified by those across the U.S., represent a united, powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for parents, and a strong advocate for public education. As the largest and oldest child advocacy organization in the nation, we can’t let our 113th birthday slip by unrecognized. Each unit submits the name of ONE volunteer, teacher, or staff member, who it feels exemplifies the spirit of PTA’s three founders, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, Alice McLellan Birney, and Selena Sloan Butler. These pioneers were women of imagination and courage. They understood the power of individual action, worked to overcome obstacles, and took action to literally change the world.

Why is there a submission deadline? The ABSOLUTE FINAL DATE for Founders Day applications and hi-res JPEG photos is Wednesday, March 10, at 5:00 p.m. Units have been instructed how to submit. We are working on the Founders Day printed program and slideshow, and cannot wait any longer. If you need assistance or have questions, please CONTACT US as soon as possible.

Are there overall winners? To honor PTA’s three founders, an independent committee reviews all applications and chooses three overall winners. On behalf of these honorees, TVC PTA donates scholarship money to the Citizens Scholarship Foundation of Temecula Valley for qualified graduating seniors.

Does a unit have to do anything besides submit a Founders Day application? As with Reflections or participation in any PTA event, a unit must be in good standing. All honoree will be recognized but to be considered for overall selection, each unit’s fees for membership, insurance, annual assessment, as well as bylaws, must be current. If you have questions about your unit’s status, please CONTACT THE COUNCIL HISTORIAN.

HISTORIANS, VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FOUNDERS DAY PLANNING

It’s awards season... the Golden Globes, the Grammys, the Oscars, and (drum roll, please) our very own PTA FOUNDERS DAY AWARDS NIGHT is right around the corner! UNIT HISTORIANS or others interested in helping with this year’s TVC PTA Founders Day Awards Celebration are needed to serve on our PLANNING COMMITTEE. The event will be held on MARCH 22, 2010; location to be determined very soon. If you’re looking for a short-term commitment, a chance to network with peers from other school sites, and an opportunity to plan "THE" PTA event of the season, THIS is the gig for you. If interested, please CONTACT US.

in response to State PTA CALL TO ACTION!

"CALIFORNIA: FUND OUR SCHOOLS" RALLY
THURSDAY, MARCH 18 - 4:00 p.m. - CHAPARRAL HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT

UNITS: It's important to have the APPROVAL OF YOUR EXECUTIVE BOARD in order for your unit to participate, publicize, and reimburse for purchases. If you do not have an executive board meeting between now and the 18th, you may call a special meeting (with at least 7 days notice given). Of course, as an individual, you may participate on your own. We need a HUGE TURNOUT to make our message clear, so we STRONGLY ENCOURAGE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION and publicity by ALL units. In addition, TVC PTA will be sending out a flyer, via email, early next week, which you are welcome to distribute throughout your school, WITH YOUR PRINCIPAL'S APPROVAL.

In reaction to the governor's proposed budget, State PTA has rolled out the action plan "9 MILLION REASONS TO SPEAK UP" to bring the education funding issue to the forefront of the public's mind and clearly define our expectations to our legislators. Below are some wonderful ideas from the State PTA Legislative Team. We encourage each unit to actively participate in this campaign by organizing YOUR OWN UNIT PTA EVENT and/or participating in our MULTI-COUNCIL RALLY. Temecula Valley Council of PTAs has partnered with our neighbors and friends from Murrieta Valley Council of PTAs to sponsor a "CA - FUND OUR SCHOOLS" rally, to speak out with one voice on behalf of the OVER 51,000 STUDENTS in our two school districts combined.

This highly publicized event will give our communities an opportunity to unite with the goal of PUTTING CHILDREN FIRST. NONE of us can afford to be complacent in this matter. WE MUST DEMAND THE BEST FOR OUR CHILDREN from our lawmakers!

We are asking EACH PTA/PTSA UNIT TO DO 2 THINGS FOR THE RALLY, please:

  1. Provide 5 rally signs for the group on foam-core poster board. Each sign should include a short phrase and/or picture. Slogans could include sayings such as, "FUND OUR SCHOOLS," "DON'T CHEAT KIDS," "STOP CUTTING EDUCATION," "OUR KIDS NEED US," etc. Please remember that signs should be appropriately worded, and in no way be vulgar, untruthful, etc. - TVC PTA reserves the right to remove offensive signs.
  2. Provide 1 case of bottled water for the event.
  3. Once the date, time & location of the event is known, PLEASE PUBLICIZE the event. Remember: Banners, school-wide flyers, emails, or Teleparent calls must receive the approval of the principal. As parents and constituents, our legislators need to hear our voices, and understand that our kids WILL NOT continue to shoulder the burden of our state's deficit.

Please plan to take part in this collaborative event and help us put ALL KIDS FIRST! With strength in our numbers and determination in our hearts, we will prevail.

VISIT THE CALIFORNIA STATE PTA WEBSITE FOR MORE WAYS YOU CAN TAKE ACTION!
