Inspired CHS Student Engages Community in Awareness Campaign!
September 2007
Chaparral High School senior, Ashlyn Johnson, is working with Temecula Councilwoman Maryann Edwards to promote battery recycling to elementary school students in Temecula. Inspired by a CHS environmental science course, Ashlyn hopes to spread the word that, as of February 8, 2006, household batteries cannot be disposed of in the trash.
Common household batteries are now labeled as “universal waste,” and subject to disposal restrictions. Did you know that the City of Temecula has six permanent disposal centers? If you didn't, this is exactly the environmental awareness message that Ashlyn is trying to deliver to Temecula elementary school students and their families.
Ashlyn will be promoting her awareness campaign at school and city events in the Temecula area. She will have a booth at the Temecula Elementary School Fall Festival (October 12) and will also be speaking at the October 25th City Council Meeting. If your PTA/PTSA would like Ashlyn to bring her message to your school, please contact her at operationbatteries@yahoo.com
Just what exactly should you do with your used household batteries? You can properly dispose them at any of the Temecula locations listed below:
Temecula City Hall Lobby - 43200 Business Park Drive
Temecula Community Center (TCC) - 28816 Pujol Street
Mary Phillips Senior Center - 41845 6th Street
